Misa de Gallo
Christmas still retains its religious identity in Mexico, so religious practices are at the center of the celebrations. Misa de Gallo is the name in Mexico for what we would call Midnight Mass, and it literally means “Mass of the Rooster.” The conclusion of this Mass marks the official start of Christmas Day and a full day of celebrating. Some communities shoot off fireworks, and everyone enjoys an elaborate meal with their families.
Día de Reyes
In the United States, Christmas Day is the conclusion of what we think of as the Christmas season. In Mexico, however, it’s just the beginning. Christmas celebrations continue through January and into the beginning of February. On January 6th, they celebrate Día de Reyes, the Day of the Kings. The Kings in question are the Three Kings or Wise Men who visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Most children in Mexico receive their presents on Día de Reyes and even write letters to the Kings like American children write letters to Santa. There is also, of course, an elaborate meal, including Rosca de Reyes.
La Candelaria
As we mentioned, the Christmas season lasts until the beginning of February. February 2nd, to be precise. This is the celebration of La Candelaria, called Candlemas by English-speaking Christians. How La Candelaria is celebrated depends on the region. In some areas, it is a relatively small celebration surrounding a family dinner. Other regions, however, host a community event. In the city of Veracruz, they have a festival complete with a parade and even a bullfight!
