Start with the Basics
The key to any great burger is an excellent patty. You want meat that’s not too lean and not too fatty to get the perfect juicy texture. Fat gives meat flavor, but if there’s too much, the patty will shrink down, and you’ll end up with a smaller burger than you expected. If there’s not enough fat, you’ll have a dry burger that doesn’t have a lot of flavor.
The other basic element of a great burger is the bun. The bun should be about the same diameter as the patty, so you don’t get a bit that’s all bread or all burger. You also want it to be thick enough that it doesn’t become flat and lifeless but not so thick that the bun is the main event.
Spice It Up with Toppings
So far, we’ve been discussing generic burger stuff. But what makes a Mexican burger Mexican? The answer, of course, is the toppings. We top ours with the classic lettuce and tomato balanced with cheese and grilled onions. We also add jalepños and sliced avocado. Jalepeños give it the spice and kick you expect from Mexican food. And do we even have to explain avocado? Guacamole, anyone?
